Home 2012

Instead of spring cleaning...

Spring packing!
While I could part with my sewing books for a while, I still need my knitting/crochet books near to me, just like an extension of self.

Flutter

That smudgy spot in the middle of the picture -

is the first yellow butterfly I saw yesterday, the first of many more.

The Power the Orange

When I came back from grocery shopping and looked at what I had bought, I saw a lot of orange.

I seem to need a bit of extra vitamin power right now.

In the Appreciation of Slow and Sometimes

I started this blanket, my knitting diary, nearly two years ago. The idea comes "The Yarn Harlot's Guide to the Land of Knitting", it is the "Traveler's Life Afghan". Yes, I love traveling, I love knitting and I think that you just can't have too many woolen blankets.

It is a great way to use up your yarn leftovers from all those projects in your life and a beautiful trip down knitting memory lane when you look at it later, like: Oh here that scratchy spring cardigan and there this hat for my father-in-law and here that was during the soccer world cup when it was really hot... and ooooh here sweet summer travels and baby knitting.

And even though my progress on the blankie is slow right now, these are precious rows.

Since the birth of baby Carolina.
A Multnomah shawl, some EC pants, a baby bonnet, pants for Annie and some women's art project. Not too bad.

Guerilla Poetry

Nachdem letztes Jahr um diese Zeit Bäume umstrickt wurden im Kleinen Bürgerbusch in Oldenburg, fand ich heute beim Frühlingsspaziergang im Großen Bürgerbusch eine neue nadelige Variante.

Weekend

While I thought I would really miss my cozy knitting evenings on the couch, I must say that I quite enjoy being cuddled up with my little one at nights now.

Still there is little knitting, too.

Plus doing something for my education. Or my well being.

Day 6: Knitting while streaming a talk show about (human) species appropriate upbringing.

Day 7: Enjoying sunday cake.

What a week full of pleasurable moments.

Women's Network

Remember my secret project?
Yesterday it was unveiled. As a small part of a larger project for International Women's Day 2012.

My friend Doris who is an artist (her blog here) initiated this project by asking women to create books wrapped in knitting, crochet or sewed in, by this giving the "old-fashioned" trades of handicraft, needlework and book printing a new meaning.

All women were asked to use the colour white. Different ideas spring to mind - like networking between women, the passing down of knowledge from generation to generation and how up-to-date these crafts are becoming again, with Ravelry just welcoming its 2nd million member. And many more (you can find out more about the project in German on the University website here).

About 100 of these books came together during the last months.

Now displayed in glass cabinets in the library foyer.

I was very honoured to find my little book next to the poems of Tagore.

With so much collective female creativity I offer you my daily 5 minutes of knitting.

Stand up for your Knitting

Day 4: Knitting 5 minutes (or even more!) while watching my own Monk-athon. What makes knitting not as comfortable and cozy as it used to be - standing while knitting (sleeping baby in sling doesn't like sitting).

100 Days and 5 minutes

When my mama came to visit last week she told me of the Japanese custom of celebrating a baby's 100st day of life, not that she is Japanese... A neighbour's son got married to a Japanese woman and lives in Japan now and they have a little baby girl, too. So my mama knows.

Hyakunichimairi - that is how this special day is called. Traditions include the baby, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother dressing in their finest clothes and visiting the family temple, followed by a feast at home with family and friends.

The celebration also includes dressing the baby girl in her very first kimono and having pictures taken at a professional photographer's. That reminded me of the little baby kimono I sewed last year in May. And what can I say after I tried to put in on Carolina? It is newborn size... and this baby, well, is a 100 days old.

Day 2: No shrine, no family feast, no photo studio to celebrate with.
Just five minutes of humble knitting.

5 a Day

The realistic and pragmatic knitting mama I have become, I have come to understand that this is not the time for knitting marathons right now. But like I tell my yoga students, that a little yoga (like five minutes a day) is better than no yoga at all, a little knitting is also better than no knitting.

This in mind, I will try and find five minutes each day of this week for knitting. Because slow and steady wins the race!

You know that your Life has changed...

... when you forget your current knitting project at Mama & Baby knitting on Thursday and only realize it on Monday.

... this Thursday from Carolina's new favourite perspective.

PS: And what did I leave behind today? The potty. Realized it straight away back home. I start to believe in maternal amnesia...
